How does the laser ranging module monitor traffic flow?

Usually, this usage method involves fixing the equipment on a gantry on a highway or core road, with the laser transmitter and receiver facing vertically towards the ground and aligned with the center of the lane. When a vehicle is driving, the distance sensor can output the relative change value of the measured distance value in real time, thus depicting the outline of the motor vehicle.


This testing method usually requires a ranging range of less than 30 meters, and the requirement is that the laser ranging frequency is relatively high, reaching 100 hertz.

This can achieve good results for monitoring in core road sections, distinguishing various types of vehicles, with a sampling rate of up to 10 centimeters per point for scanning the height of the vehicle body, and real-time discrimination for vehicle height and length limits, motor vehicle classification, etc. It can also quickly output data.


When there are no motor vehicles arriving, the distance sensor measures a constant distance, which is also the distance from the distance sensor to the ground. When a motor vehicle passes under the distance sensor, the distance value changes. When the distance value returns to the constant again, it is considered that a vehicle has passed. According to this method, we can monitor the traffic flow passing through these road sections.


The commonly used method now is to statistically average the traffic flow over a period of time, which has a large estimation component.
